The remodel to the Nelson Legacy Group’s Houghton Center has been completed. The Metropolitan Market had their grand opening on May 13, 2010 and the project was considered complete on June 3, 2010. The center received a complete face-lift with new facades, canopies, finishes and paint for the entire center, as well as a complete remodel to the previous atrium area creating a large and inviting courtyard.
The 53,770 SF shopping center was overdue for an update, and the Houghton community is pleased with the outcome. Beginning in early 2008, the project team, including representatives of the Nelson Legacy Group, Woodman Construction, Driftmier Architects, and numerous tenants and consultants, met weekly at the Driftmier offices.
One of the interesting features of the project is a large painted mural titled “Houghton Through the Years.” This tracks the community from the early days of logging and farming when settlers called it Pleasant Bay, through the ship building years of both world wars, the construction of ferry boats and a variety of other ships, the growth of the community to include the first two homes for the Seattle Seahawks, and to the residential and recreational gem Houghton has become.
Anchored by Metropolitan Market and Bartell’s, the shopping center still includes many of Houghton’s long existing shops, including: Quiznos, Houghton Dry Cleaners, U Frame It, Washington State Liquor Store, Curves for Women, Manon Engineering, Academic Link and Tracy Nails. In addition to Metropolitan Market, new tenants include Sport Clips, and Nature’s Pet Market.
